Nitric Oxide system is suppressed by Poison/"Vitamin A"
Quote from Dr. Garrett Smith on January 16, 2019, 9:18 pmThere are those out there that propose that NO (nitric oxide)--a lack of it--is at the root of aging and many/most diseases. Interesting theory...did you know that the Poison/"Vitamin A" system (called the retinergic system in the paper below) has been shown to SUPPRESS the NO system? Therefore, is the solution to take a bunch of supplements to try to temporarily and artificially jack up NO production...or is the cure to get rid of the Poison/"Vitamin A" toxicity problem? You can probably guess my choice.

Like retinoic acid, NO is a two-edged sword in that physiological levels are required for normal functioning whereas excess NO produces neurotoxicity. Inhibition of NO decreases acetylcholine release and impairs learning, indicating that cholinergic activity is involved in the cognitive effects of NO. NO production is impaired by stress and in pathophysiological conditions, including chronic renal failure, essential hypertension, diabetes, and epilepsy and appears to affect cognitive function in these conditions. NO production is also decreased in aging and in Alzheimer's disease. In sum, the nitrergic system corresponds to nitric oxide (NO) produced from neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) and functions as a brain neurotransmitter, with roles in nonsynaptic interneuronal communication as well as excitotoxic neuronal injury at higher concentrations [125].
There is evidence that the retinergic and nitrergic systems have a reciprocal inhibitory relationship, in that retinoic acid (RA) can inhibit NO [126, 127] and vice versa [128].
